| Sorry for any trouble people experienced with my system yesterday (Dec 14,
1999). My disk decided that /usr/lib should be a block device and not a
directory. Luck for me, I had a recent backup to restore from.

| Lightning Strikes |
| Last night at around 6pm, lightning struck the tree next to my apartment. Power went out, and the system went down. Power returned at 3am this morning. When I got my ass out of bed at around 7am the system came right back up (after some really scary fscks). If there are any important files that you need missing, let me know and I'll see what I can do.

QuickCam in my living room. Don't expect any sex. Don't expect any
nudity. In fact don't expect anything exciting at all. It'll mostly
be me staring at my monitor.

Wednesday (June 23) between 2:15 and 6pm. Teleport
decided to change my ip address. I should be set up with
an 'official' static ip address soon. Thanks to Christian
in tech support for being so helpful.

| I've made telnet a little more strict in light of our
recent visit by a friendly hacker. From now on, telnet
will only allow access from an approved host
(i.e. *.teleport.com). If you are unsure if any of the
hosts from which you connect are on my list, drop me an
email with any hosts you use.

| Most people won't notice any difference here, but those who use irc may notice that they get refused by less servers.
identd is a program that implements the RFC1413 identification server.
identd operates by looking up specific TCP/IP connections and
returning the user name of the process owning the connection.

Looks like doughnut.net got hacked Jan 23 16:33:32. I
don't have plans to turn this person in unless I find
something malicious done to my system. I do however
have their IP address, and I've collected a lot of
clues. I have reason to believe that they did _not_ get
anyone's password. I'd like all users change them
anyway. The hacker _did_ get root access, and therefore
had access to any of your files (including mail). I
apologize for this.

I'm back up. Teleport dropped all of its DSL customers late yesterday afternoon. Rumor has it the UPS on the DHCP server for DSL failed. None of us could log on and check Teleport's status page, so I waited on hold for tech support for ever until I was told what was going on. The support guys I talked to, Ryan and Ashley(?), were very polite.
